CHAME GENTE -A História do Trio Elétrico
『PEOPLE MAGNET - The history of the Electric Trio』
Documentary
Long movie
Duration: 58 min – Color
Year: 2002
Director: Mini Kerti
Synopsis: Perhaps one could call it “the people-calling-music-machine”,
or “coach-car-amplifier that drives people wild”, or yet
“movable-stage that brings carnival to the people”. These
would have been appropriately defined names, providing a
relatively good explanation for this bizarre music truck.
But how could they possibly be absorbed by popular culture?
Thank God the people themselves took charge of baptizing
this wild “thing” as the “Electric Trio”.

The “thing” was invented in the same region where a country named Brazil was born: Bahia. It was during a carnival , fifty-two years ago, when two ordinary citizens, Dodô e Osmar, decided to climb on top of an old Ford pick-up truck to play carnival music on the streets of Salvador, Bahia. They were musicians who wanted to have fun and bring joy to the people. They accomplished much more than that. They invented what came to be called the “Trio Eletrico”.
Since then, the Trio has never stopped evolving. The old Ford pick-up truck (FobicaI) – nowadays duly kept in a museum - was upgraded to a 5-ton-truck, properly converted into a stage platform with a state of the art sound system. Most importantly, it revolutionized carnival by bringing the elite out of the exclusive clubs onto the streets of Salvador, Bahia. carnival became a melting pot of people from all walks of life. As the years go by, the Electric Trio continues to pave the way for a mixture of sounds and rhythms that are constantly redefining Brazilian popular music. In so doing, the Trio has brought at once social, ethnic and racial changes, allowing for a more democratic and creative carnival . It created an absolutely original industry based solely on national creativity. In the meantime, it gained international attention. Above all, the Trio is said to have changed and it continues to change people’s lives.

Could this really be possible? Could a carnival -music-truck possibly bring so much joy anddemocracy to a festive occasion as to have transformed the lives of so many people? According to the protagonists interviewed in the documentary, Call the People, the answer is yes. Among them are the very creators of the “Trio Elétrico”, Dodô and Osmar, and famous Brazilian musicians such as Dorival Caimi, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Moraes Moreira, Daniela Mercury, Luiz Caldas, Vovô do Ilê, Baby do Brasil, Pepeu Gomes, Ivete Sangalo, to name a few. Most importantly, the people of Brazil speak, piecing together this fascinating chapter in the history of the Brazilian carnival .
