Synopsis: Durval and his mother Carmita share a humdrum
existence in the back of Durval’s old-fashioned vinyl record
store. Until, one day, Durval decides to hire a housemaid
to help his mother around the house. The unconventional Celia
brings a breath of fresh air into their lives. But the day
after starting work she disappears, leaving behind a five
year old girl, Kiki, and a note saying she’ll be back in two
days. Durval and Carmita are completely won over by the child
but soon discover the sad reality behind Celia and Kiki on
the TV’s nightly news program. From here on the flip side
of the film begins, and the plot now revolves around police
officers, agony and liberation.

The Director
Screen and TV writer / director, Anna Muylaert was born in São Paulo in 1964.
She studied cinematography at the University of São Paulo`s School of Art and Communication before working as a film critic for the IstoÉ weekly new`s magazine and Caderno 2 for the Estado de São Paulo newspaper.
Her short films include A Origem dos Bebes Segundo Kiki Cavalcante (The Origin of Babies According to Kiki Cavalcante), which won the Best Film award at the Rio Cine and Cine Ceará Festivals.
She has also directed various videos and video-clips, such as Mama Africa for Brazilian popular songwriter Chico Cesar, in addition to working as a screenwriter on the TV programs Mundo da Lua and Castelo Ratimbumfor - TV Cultura and Disney Club for SBT.

Pena Schmidt, a record producer since 1964, coordinated Durval’s selection of songs. Focussing on Brazilian pop music of the 70`s, the selection includes classics such as A Fim de Voltar and Imunização Racional by Tim Maia; Que Maravilha and Taj Mahal by Jorge Ben; Alfomega by Caetano Veloso; Preta Pretinha and Besta é Tu by the Novos Baianos; Ovelha Negra by Rita Lee; Back in Bahia by Gilberto Gil, among others. On the B side of the film the totally original soundtrack was composed by André Abujamra.
As a special treat, the group Os Mulheres Negras, inactive for years, came together to record Mestre Jonas for the opening theme.
