Special Exhibition of The Mystery of Samba trailers– All about Portela!

Before the official screening at the festival, we will showcase trailers of The Mystery of Samba, which includes curiosities and inside stories about the Old Generation of Portela samba school, including singer Marisa Monte interviewing samba musicians and singing a Portela samba.

※ This it is not a movie preview, but an exhibition of trailers and highlighted scenes.

Discussion panel Session after screening The Mystery of Samba

Every year the Festival Cinema Brasil showcase musical documentaries that become one of the special attractions of the event.
This year, after showcasing the musical documentary, we are going to carry out a Discussion panel with Mr. Katsunori Tanaka. -- president of Office Sambinha and producer of several Portela old generation musicians -- and with Mr. Jin Nakahara -- DJ and MC of this event --, who will talk about the inside stories of samba musicians and their songs.

During the session, we will provide Brazilian food and drinks, including caipirinha!
Also, on October 3rd, prior to the exhibition of The Mystery of Samba, Jin Nakahara will provide some insights into the movie.

Festival Special Guest: Greetings from Movie Director Akiko Nagura!

The director Akiko Nagura -- whose film Pertificando will be screened at the Special Session is the special guest at this year’s festival.
The movies I am Happy and Pertificando, which will be screened at the Special Session, are from Japanese directors who focus on Brazilian culture. The director Akiko Nagura will make an appearance and greet the audience.

Answer the questionnaire and get a chance to win an official Festival Cinema Brasil 2009 T-shirt!

This year’s design of the festival t-shirt is very cool and innovative! Created by Futoshi Nakayama, the t-shirts were printed by SHIPS. We have a total of 20 of the limited edition t-shirts to giveaway.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning one is fill in the questionnaire, which will be handed out at the entrance of each showing. This means that a person, who watches 12 films, will have 12 chances to win the t-shirt. Fill in the questionnaire after each session and put it in the collection box at the exit.

After the festival has finished, we will draw 15 questionnaires for Tokyo festival and 5 for Osaka festival. Please note that you can only win one t-shirt.

Remember to write your address and t-shirt size on the questionnaire. Illegible questionnaires will be discarded.

Brazilian music CDs / DVDs on sale at festival hall

There will be a selection of Brazilian music CDs and DVDs available for sale in the festival hall!

Among the Brazilian music CDs and DVDs on sale there will be the album Tudo Azul,-- which inspired the creation of the movie The Mistery of Samba --, the CD of the movie Cartola, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s DVD, etc.

There will be limited supplies of the album Tudo Azul! Make sure you arrive on time or you might miss it!

The programs from previous festivals will be also on sale. Those who purchase any festival
product will receive this year’s festival poster. Don’t be late or you might lose the chance
to receive this limited edition poster!

One of the staff recommendations is the concert of the best Brazilian A cappella group -- BR6 -- on their first visit to Japan during the festival.

Free screening! Special Exhibition about Amazon

What is your image of the Amazon?
This year we will commemorate 80 years of Japanese immigration to the Amazon, Festival Cinema Brasil has created Amazon Session a one off unique free exhibition.

The Amazon Session presents the documentary by JICA, Japanese Pioneers’ Saga in the Amazon – containing stunning photography and heart-warming interviews with the first Japanese immigrants to Amazonia. --; another documentary to be screened is Welcome back to Amazon, from the Japanese director and designer Nobuyuki Ogata.

The purpose of the free screening, Amazon Session, is to introduce the power, magnetism, emotion, wealth, variety of life and peace that exists in nature. Any visitor or spectator will feel their insignificance when compared to the magnificence of the Amazon.

Besides being the largest forest in the world, with the biggest concentration of fresh water and biodiversity on the planet, Amazon is a spring of life, one of the few places on the Earth where Mother Nature still exercises her magnificent power.

Amazon is a priceless treasure that needs to be preserved at all costs and we would like to show its importance to as many people as possible.

During the 5th year of Festival Cinema Brasil, we will be raising funds for Amazon Preservation and we hope to count on your valuable contribution!
